Love Never Fails

We do not know
everything about you,
but we know the truth
of what you have revealed.

The creativity that glitters
those raging, fiery suns
to twinkle in distance
and pin-point the night sky
with soft beauty.
The creativity that speaks
with intent and purpose,
causing nourishing growth
to unfold in vast petals of colours
that inspire more creativity;
that shapes a being with choice
and all the complexities
of what it is to be a person...
and you breathed life into our nostrils.

We do not know
everything about you,
but we know the truth
of what you have revealed.

Your unbridled compassion
that pursues and chases.
Your patience that endured
the dust of centuries of ignorance,
and the filthy spiral of
broken human aspiration
to claim our own divinity,
or to label the most putrid of selfish gain
with the will of God.
We know your patience,
that keeps turning cheeks
and refuses to destroy the guilty.

We do not know
everything about you,
but we know the truth
of what you have revealed.

The self accommodation,
the stooping to meet us
in our flesh and breath.
To communicate most profoundly
the purpose of man,
the personality of divinity,
and the true intention of family
and mutual belonging.
We know you through that unique revealing;
a life that would not
pander to the mob and
stir with propaganda;
whose compassion and power
drew vast crowds and
whose uncompromising truth
and always pointing upward
many could not accept.
Whose death fools mockers
of their own victory
in the tragedy of broken skin
and wasted dreams.
But whose death is
fully realising the poison of rejection...
and swallowing it;
making family of estranged generations,
and whose resurrection is a promise
and a sure hope
and a proclamation of freedom from death,
and it is by this we know love
and love that does not fail

We do not know
everything about you,
but we know the truth
of what you have revealed.

I know that I was lost in sin and death.
I know that this world is broken.
And I know that those who
are being asphyxiated by debt ,
poisoned with addiction,
scarred by abuse,
bled by loss,
and weathered by unsympathetic, hard and cold streets,
can find their hope and the truth of this gospel,
the truth of who you are,
and by this we know love:

A love that does not fail.

Written for and performed at the Watford New Hope Trust 22nd birthday celebration on 23/03/12.
An exploration of God's unfailing love, through creation, his pursuit of 'humanity on the run' culminating in his self revelation and redemption in Jesus' life, death and resurrection, and a small expression of the width and depth of the hope of this gospel for the desperate and forgotten.

  1. This is a powerful poem: deep and broad in its grasp of the God and in its application of that grasp to the human situation.
